Inspired by the island’s character and natural beauty, company founder and CEO, Kay Stanley, imagined how linen and leather could marry with colorful patterns and timeless island stories. That thought became a beautifully coordinated handbag collection beloved by women everywhere.
Oh, how that idea grew. Spartina 449 is now internationally known and featured in specialty retail shops across the country.
What's in a Name?
The company name originates from the lush, green cordgrass that flourishes in the saltwater marshes along the Carolina coast. Its Latin name? Spartina alterniflora. And the number 449? Well, it’s the address of that cozy cottage on Daufuskie Island where the Lowcountry landscapes and creaky floorboards helped bring a novel handbag company to life.
The Spartina Mermaid
Captivating colors, irresistible style—it was only natural that a mermaid became our insignia! The Spartina 449 mermaid is inspired by tales of sailors who, after a night of indulging in island spirits, gazed into the moonlit ocean, convinced they saw mermaids swimming nearby. More than likely, they were actually swooning over local dolphins!

The fabric that graces every Spartina 449 handbag follows the same linen tradition that began over 30,000 years ago with ancient Egyptians. It’s the same technique that has evolved into today’s French and Belgian linens, woven by specially commissioned artisans who create Spartina’s intricate signature weaves.
More durable than commonly used cotton, the exterior linen on Spartina’s handbags is additionally protected with a water and stain resistant coating. Combine this with Spartina’s eco-friendly, water-based inks, and the result is a faithfully crafted and luxurious line of stylish linen handbags and accessories.
How to Care for Spartina Linen
Spartina Handbags are made of heavy woven linen. All of the linen is treated with a stain and water resistant coating. The recommendation for care is spot cleaning with a cloth just slightly dampened with warm water.
How to Care for Spartina Leather
Dampen a lint-free cloth with cool water and wipe the leather clean. Start from the top of the leather and wipe — do not rub — while moving downward. Refrain from saturating it; then let air-dry. Buff it with a lint-free cloth dampened with leather cleaner and conditioner.
Keep all leather away from direct heat and sunlight. Do not dry clean leather or use all-purpose cleaners. Store all types of leather in a cool, dry location that has low humidity.
How to Care for Spartina Jewelry
The jewelry is plated with precious metals and therefore requires proper care. It is not designed to wear around-the-clock. Please give it a break from time to time. Remove your jewelry when washing hands, swimming, exercising or bathing and before you apply personal body products like make up, lotion or perfume.
Plating can react by darkening when over exposed to air and light. Store in a fabric pouch or closed box away from sun or heat. Do not store your jewelry in the bathroom where steam and moisture may affect it.
Gold & Silver Plating
The jewelry has a protective lacquer finish that helps keep tarnishing at bay. Use a soft dry cloth or slightly dampened cloth with water only to clean it. Dry immediately. Do not rub too briskly or you could damage the lacquer and cause tarnishing to occur. Never use any chemicals or soaps.
Rhodium Plating
Clean with warm water and a mild liquid soap. Rinse and dry with a soft cloth.
Do not use harsh jewelry chemical cleaners or treated polishing cloths.
